Mr. Jason Munchel » Bio

Bio

Mr. Jason Munchel was born and raised in York County and has been teaching sixth grade in the Red Lion Area School District for the past 19 years. He currently is educating students at Larry J.Macaluso Elementary School with a focus on math and science exploration. Mr. Munchel earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Duquesne University, and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Temple University.
 
Mr.Munchel enjoys reading and spending time outdoors with his wife and two children.

We will be concluding unit 6 this week and will be taking our assessment on Friday. We will use this week to review and practice strategies for solving equations. All unit 6 Math Boxes will be due on Friday.
In science we have concluded our unit on heat energy and have started to learn about electricity. Our focus has been on how electrically charged particles interact. Our science work can be found on our Google classroom page.
 
Spring picture day is this Friday. Our scheduled time is 1:20.

We will be starting unit 7 in math this week. We will continue to learn about graphing inequalities as well as how to input spreadsheet formulas. The unit 6 math assessment was returned today. Please look over the assessment and sign and return it to school by Friday. Math homework for this week includes:

In science we will continue our unit on electricity. Students will be introduced to a project that will allow them to apply what they have learned about static electricity and we will begin learning about simple circuits.

Last week we completed our unit 5 math assessment. The results of this assessment were shared with the class today. Please sign and have your child return the test by Friday. In math this week we will be learning how to use the guess and check strategy and bar models to solve equations. We will have a quiz on Friday. Homework for this week includes:

In science we are beginning to create our cooler designs. Much of the work we are doing will occur in class as we apply concepts that we have learned about heat energy. If you would like to see what we are learning ask your child to share their Google classroom page.
 
Grandparent's Day for sixth grade will be on February 14. Information about this visit was shared with the class last Friday.

In math this week we have been learning how to use draw nets to find the surface area of 3-dimensional figures. In addition we have also been learning how to find the volume of rectangular prisms.

In science we have been learning how heat energy moves and will use this knowledge to create an insulated container next week.
 
 

January 10, 2018

Winter weather has adjusted our schedule many times since the start of the year. Here is where we currently are:
 
In math we have begun Unit 5 and students have been given their new math journals. Their old math journals will be kept in their lockers to be used as a reference throughout the remainder of the year. Currently we are learning how to find the area of triangles and parallelograms. In addition, we will begin finding the area of irregular polygons. The Unit 4 Assessments were handed back on Monday, please sign and return them by Friday. Math Boxes 5.1 - 5.4 are due by Friday. We will also have our last quiz of the marking period at the end of the week. In science we have started learning about heat energy. We will be learning how heat moves and is transferred between objects.
 
Sixth grade parent visitation day is Wednesday January 24, 2018. Information will be sent home on Friday. Currently that is a Day 3. I will make the schedule for the day available as we get closer to the date. Have a great week and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

December 18, 2017

We will be spending much of this week wrapping up what we have been learning and preparing for the winter break. In math this week we will take our unit 4 assessment on Wednesday and will then be using math skills to design a snowman based off of specific criteria. In science the class will be wrapping up their self-paced unit on the electromagnetic spectrum. This Google classroom activity needs to be completed by Friday. Assignments for the week include:

Tomorrow we will be taking a virtual field trip and learning about Christmas Traditions across Europe.
 
Thursday will be our school holiday assembly in addition we will also be learning what constellations and stars are visible in the night sky during this time of year. This is also our schoolwide ugly sweater day.
 
Friday we will spend time with our book buddies designing containers that can withstand a one story drop and keep candy canes intact.

Currently we are learning about inequalities and will be graphing solution sets this week. The last 2 math quizzes we have completed can be found within your child's binder and we will again have a quiz this Friday. Homework assigned for the week includes:

In science we have begun learning about the energy within the electromagnetic spectrum and currently students are using activities and videos within Google classroom to learn about these forms of energy.

December 4, 2017

Last week we began unit 4 in math and currently we are learning about variables and writing algebraic expressions. We will apply this skill as we begin to solve equations. The unit 3 assessment was sent home last week and is due to be signed and returned this Thursday. In addition last week students learned how to access all of the math materials (home links, student reference books, games, etc.) at home. Homework assigned for the week includes:

In science we are concluding our unit on sound and will be creating sound amplification devices in class. We will be testing these devices on Wednesday. Our next unit will focus on light and the electromagnetic spectrum. Have a great week feel free to call with and questions or concerns.
 

November 13, 2017

We will continue to learn about percents this week in math and we will also be applying this skill as we revisit data collection and begin making box and whisker plots. We will have our unit 3 math assessment on Friday. Homework for the week will include the remaining unit 3 math boxes which are due on Friday as well as selected questions from the unit 3 review that was handed out today. We will discuss the entire review before the assessment on Friday.
 
 
In science we have have been learning about outlining and taking notes from a text. We will use our notes this week to complete some in class activities and will also be learning about the relationship between frequency and pitch.
 
This last day to sign up for a parent teacher conference is this Wednesday.

We will be taking our Unit 2 Math Assessment tomorrow. We reviewed in class today and the assessment will focus on least common multiple, greatest common factor, multiplying fractions, dividing fractions, and rate tables. We will begin Unit 3 on Wednesday and will begin learning about decimals.

In science we have been learning about waves and the relationship between amplitude and frequency. We have been competing a lab using Google Classroom. This lab is due on Wednesday.

This week in math class we will be continue to work with ratios. Students will explore different strategies to solve ratio problems using equivalent rates, rate tables, and graphing. In science class we will be exploring energy transfers by creating sketches of Rube Goldberg machines. We have been exploring some interesting designs and students can be creative as they wish with their own designs.
 
The cross country meet will be occurring this Friday at 9:30, weather permitting. Be sure to have your child dressed to run and have a water bottle and any necessary medication or sunscreen for the event.
