How to add multi-digit numbers using the Column Addition Method.

hello everyone this is mr. Smith and I'm here to talk with you today about admission in class we've been sing on a new edition strategy which is called column addition now we've already talked about the partial sums addition where we start with column and we add 200 then we add pens and we add the ones and combine the mall at the end the nother Edition strategy that were cover column addition  competition is similar to traditional different  what's a question for you for example if we're trying to add 248 + 187 in traditional Edition we would start in the ones column we would at 8 + 7:15 and we would write down the 5 and carry the one in column addition we do the basic can you call him first and we do all of the trading and rearranging the columns later at the ends take a look 8 + 7 15 4 + 8 is 12 + 2 + 1 is 3 notice that in each of the column 15 and the 12 are written in the column even though they don't fit we put the entire number there for the first step Raiders are stuck in stuff  so we end up  what's 312 + 15 + in the Second Step we're going to go to that 15 and we're going to trade or regroup the 15 so we can see if I can get my finger to the right place years are 15 and what we're going to do is we're going to take that 1:10 and we're going to move it over here go to the 10, so in the one on we're left with a V and 12 in the tens column now becomes a 13 we have a 3 of 13 and a 5  stuff we still have one problem that needs to be regrouped see what's here for a final step right in the middle we have our three or 13 and R5 so now going to regroup or trade right here at the 1331 in the 13 of the 10 I should say is going to come over to the 100 turn on so the three becomes before so we're left with four in the hundred three in the 10 and 5 in the ones are in 435 personal problem except numbers at the bottom and doing the trading at the bottom instead of tearing our numbers up at the top of the column now you may be wondering why we show the students how to do the traditional way for everything I deal with everyday math is to expose them for a lot of different strategies and hopefully one of them will help to make it clear what process is going on when we're completing this a problem so the goal is for students understand how to solve this problem by parcel song understand what's going on when you saw this by column addition field Susan find the Earth solve in the traditional way and that's okay too I hope it makes it a little more clear to you as far as what's going on when does Kevin other questions on let me know and I'll do my best to explain it
