Mr. Jason Munchel » Bio

Bio

Mr. Jason Munchel was born and raised in York County and has been teaching sixth grade in the Red Lion Area School District for the past 18 years. He currently is educating students at Larry J.Macaluso Elementary School with a focus on math and science education. Mr. Munchel earned a Bachelor's Degree in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Duquesne University, and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Temple University.
 
Mr.Munchel enjoys reading and spending time outdoors with his wife and two children.

The last full week of school is upon us but we will continue to learn in sixth grade. In math we will be wrapping up our fraction and decimal free choice activities which are due tomorrow. We will use some of this week to present our projects to the class and then will be learning the math behind creating a mobile. In science we are learning about levers and the advantages that are gained by using these simple tools. The last day of school is Friday June 2 which will be a half day. As we approach the end of the year if the opportunity arises we will be taking some time to get outside more. If you are concerned about your child's exposure to the sun I would suggest that you allow your child to keep suntan lotion within their book-bags for self application. We will be spending the morning hours Tuesday May 30 outside completing activities with our book buddies. Have a great week and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

PSSA testing has come to a close and we have entered the last full month of school. In math we will be solving linear algebraic equations with both positive an negative values using the Hands-On Equations Learning System. In addition students will be completing choice activities involving fractions and decimals. The guidelines for this activity will be shared with the class during the week. These independent activities will be completed both in the classroom and if needed at home. There is one Math Rules sheet due for homework on Friday.
In science we are learning about the relationships between electricity and magnetism and will soon be working to create our own electromagnets.
 
Just a reminder that the sixth grade party is scheduled for May 25th from 3:30 - 7:30 here at LJM. The permission slip and other relevant information can be found in a past post.
 
The Intermediate Track Meet will be held Monday May 8.

Junior High course selection papers as well as information about the process were sent home today. Please sign and return by this form by Friday. We will attending the book fair on Thursday of this week. All students receive one free book courtesy of the PTO. 
This week in math class we will be reviewing and applying skills involving histograms, surface area, formulas, and graphing. Math PSSA testing will occur next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
In science we have we are going to apply what we have learned about circuit construction to Ohm's Law and learn about the relationships between voltage, current, and resistance. Have a great week and don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
 
 

April 3, 2017

PSSA testing is this week. The class will be taking the English Language Arts Test from approximately 9:15 - 11:15 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. There is no assigned homework for math or science during this period. Report cards and the results of the unit 7 assessment were sent home today. Please sign and return both by Friday. Information was shared was sent home with students last week regarding an end of the year sixth grade party. If that information was not shared with you please inquiry about it with your child. I have included a digital copy of the form above this post.

PSSA testing will begin next week. If your child has not shared the information that was sent home with them least week ask them to share that with you. Today is also the end of the third marking period. Report cards will be sent home next week. This week in math we will continue to graph rates and equations. We will have our unit 7 assessment on Friday and will review on Thursday. Homework for the week includes:

In science class we have been learning about electrical energy and the interaction between particles. This week we will begin learning about circuits are will create virtual circuits either at the end of this week or the beginning of next.

This week in science class we are learning about sound and finishing constructing devices that allow us to amplify sound without electronics or adjusting the volume. We will be testing our designs this week. In math we will be focusing on finding the volume of 3 - dimensional figures. Last week we used much of our class time to complete the  ADAM, a district wide math assessment that measures student growth over time. Today all students participated in the program Breaking the Silence hosted by the Byrnes Health Center. The focus was on mental illness. Be sure to ask your child what they learned. In math this week we will continue to learn about writing and evaluating algebraic expression and equations.
